Highlights
This week, 87 Canadian women are competing in professional hockey, rugby, basketball, and golf across Canada, Turkey, Spain, Thailand, France, and the USA.
🏀 Basketball
Unrivaled Basketball League
Aaliyah Edwards reached the 1x1 competition final, falling to American star Napheesa Collier in a thrilling best-of-three showdown - click here for match highlights. She beat #1 seed Breanna Stewart in the first round, who along with Collier are the two co-founders of the Unrivaled Basketball League.
After just one season in the WNBA, Edwards held her own against all-star veterans with 6+ years of experience, proving she belongs among the best—and earning a cool $50K in the process! Congratulations to Aaliyah for not only surpassing her offseason development goals but also gaining well-deserved recognition along the way.
It’s now back to 3 x 3 action this week where Aaliyah and her Mist team take on Vinyl on February 21st at 8:15 p.m. Watch on TSN+.
Athletes Unlimited League
Kia Nurse’s team unfortunately lost all 3 games last week. She is currently in 7th position on the Leaderboard. Even with the losses, her excellent individual play is keeping her from sliding further as she shot 43.7% from the field, netting 20.2 points in 31.5 minutes per game. Next game this week:
February 23rd at 5:30 p.m. - watch on ESPN+
🏒 Hockey
We’re happy to report that Natalie Spooner, last season’s PWHL highest scorer, is back in the Toronto Sceptres uniform after missing the first half of the season recovering from injury. Even with her absence, Forbes reports that PWHL goals are up, and attendance has risen 33% year over year, driven in part by strong turnouts at large venues during the Takeover Tour—games showcasing the league in cities eager for future franchises. However, some concerns remain about attendance, particularly for U.S.-based teams still working to fill their arenas.
⛳ Golf
Brooke Henderson sets her sights on the Honda LPGA Thailand, running from February 20 to 23. After the first round, she sits tied for 23rd at -2, eight shots off the lead. Catch the action live on the Golf Channel:
February 21 & 22: 10:30 p.m. – 3:30 a.m. (ET)
🎾 Tennis
Leylah Fernandez lost her first round match last week in Dubai. To help her prepare for the Indian Wells tournament which begins March 6th she may play in a tournament in Mexico, though her participation is not confirmed at the time of publication.
🏉 Rugby
Sophie de Goede and 5 other Canadian women who play on the Saracens of the England Premiership League are fighting for second place and a play-off position on February 21. The semi-finals are scheduled for March 2, and the final is scheduled for March16. Once the season is over we’ll get to see the Canadians regroup as a team for the Rugby World Cup Championship which runs August 22 to September 27.
⚽ Soccer
Canada is playing in the Pinatar tournament in Spain - the first for new coach Casey Stoney. They tied China 1 - 1 on Wednesday, February 19, and are scheduled to play Mexico on Saturday, February 22, and Chinese Taipei on February 25 - all games at 13:00.
